History of Agra Fort

Agra Fort's history spans over 500 years and multiple dynasties. Originally a brick fort known as Badalgarh, it was captured by the Mughals under Emperor Babur in 1526 after the First Battle of Panipat. However, the fort as we see it today was largely rebuilt by Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573.

Akbar recognized Agra's strategic importance and transformed the crumbling structure into a magnificent red sandstone fortress. Over 4,000 builders worked for eight years to complete the construction. His grandson Shah Jahan later added the white marble palaces and mosques that give the fort its distinctive dual character of red sandstone and white marble.

The fort served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638 when Shah Jahan shifted the capital to Delhi. Tragically, Shah Jahan spent his final eight years imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb, gazing at the Taj Mahal he had built for his beloved wife from the Musamman Burj tower.

Architecture of Agra Fort

Agra Fort is a masterpiece of Mughal military architecture combined with elegant palatial design. The fort complex spans 94 acres, enclosed by double walls rising up to 70 feet high. The outer wall, made of red sandstone, stretches 2.5 kilometers with a 9-meter wide moat that was once filled with water and crocodiles.

The architecture reflects two distinct phases: Akbar's robust red sandstone structures emphasizing strength and grandeur, and Shah Jahan's delicate white marble additions showcasing refined aesthetics. This combination creates a fascinating visual contrast throughout the complex.

Architectural Highlights

  • Walls: 70 feet high, 2.5 km circumference, double fortification
  • Gates: Originally had 4 gates, only 2 remain (Delhi Gate & Amar Singh Gate)
  • Material: Red sandstone (Akbar period) and white marble (Shah Jahan period)
  • Palaces: Over 500 buildings originally, many destroyed by British
