Perched high on a hill overlooking Maota Lake, Amber Fort (Amer Fort) is the most iconic attraction in Jaipur. Built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a massive palace complex built from pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble. It was the capital of the Kachwaha Rajputs before Jaipur was built.
The fort is known for its artistic Hindu style elements, cobbled paths, large ramparts, and series of gates. But the real magic lies inside the palace walls.
Top Things to See Inside Amber Fort
1. Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace)
The crown jewel of Amber Fort. The walls and ceilings are embedded with thousands of tiny concave mirrors. Legend has it that a single candle can illuminate the entire hall, mimicking a starry sky. It was built because the queen loved sleeping under the stars but couldn't sleep outdoors in winter.
2. Ganesh Pol
The magnificent gateway leading to the private palaces of the Maharajas. It is covered in intricate frescoes and features a Ganesh idol. Above the gate is the Suhag Mandir, where royal ladies used to watch functions held in the Diwan-i-Aam through latticed windows.
3. Diwan-i-Aam & Diwan-i-Khas
The Hall of Public Audience (Diwan-i-Aam) is a double row of columns where the Raja met the common public. The Hall of Private Audience (Diwan-i-Khas) has rich carvings and was for special guests.
4. The Secret Tunnel
A 2 km long underground tunnel connects Amber Fort to Jaigarh Fort higher up the hill. It was an escape route for the royal family during times of war. Part of this tunnel is now open to tourists.
The Elephant Ride
A popular way to reach the fort entrance is on elephant back.
- Timings: 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM only.
- Cost: Approx ₹1100 for two people.
- Note: Due to animal welfare concerns, many tourists now prefer taking a jeep (approx ₹500) or walking up the cobbled path (15-20 mins) which offers great views.
Light and Sound Show
In the evening, the fort comes alive with a scripted light and sound show at the foot of the hill (at Maota Lake). It narrates the history of the Rajput kings.
