What is the drive to Lansdowne like?
Two roads in one, which is the road guide's phrase. The first is the plains run: the Delhi–Meerut Expressway from the edge of the city to Meerut, 70 km, then the slower state highway that leaves the expressway and runs east and north through the cane country to Bijnor and on to Kotdwar. Khatauli is the breakfast halt, as on every Uttarakhand-bound corridor.
The second road begins at Kotdwar, 230 km from Delhi: forty kilometres of ghat through Dugadda, narrow and twisting, with sections that have no parapet, first through sal forest and then into oak and pine as the air cools. The road guide gives an hour and a quarter for the forty kilometres and calls that honest, and it is taken in daylight, which is why the whole drive is planned around a five o'clock start from Delhi: on the ghat by half past nine, on the ridge by a quarter to eleven, with the day ahead.

Why is the cash warning the first thing everyone says?
Because Lansdowne is a cantonment, not a market town, and it has none of the things a market town has, an ATM among them. The guesthouses, the tea stalls at the viewpoints, the boatman at Bhulla Lake and the pony man on the forest path all work in cash, and phone payments are only as good as the signal on the ridge, which comes and goes. Kotdwar is the last flat ground, the last ATM and the last proper food, and the road guide's advice is to do all three there, with a pause at the Sidhbali Baba temple outside the town if you want it. Draw more than you think you need; the drive back to Kotdwar for a cash machine is an hour and a quarter each way on the ghat.
Two days on the ridge
- Day one, late morning. Arrive off the ghat, drop the bags, and walk. Lansdowne is a cantonment on a ridge with no mall road to speak of; the point is the silence and the forest, and the first afternoon is for finding that out on foot.
- Day one, afternoon. Bhulla Lake, the cantonment's small lake a walk from the bazaar, with the boats and the café; St Mary's Church, the old garrison church; and the war memorial and the regimental museum if they are open, on the cantonment's own terms.

- Day two, morning. The forest walks out of the cantonment, or the drive to the villages beyond it with the same car; in the rains the paths have leeches, which the road guide mentions so that you are not surprised.
- Day two, after lunch. Down the ghat in daylight, cash still in your pocket, and the cane belt in the afternoon; home by evening.
The whole of the second day is the drive home if you want the morning on the ridge, so the honest weekend is Saturday morning to Sunday evening with nothing else in it. A third night turns it into a rest rather than a visit, and on the rate card it costs one more day at the minimum.
When to go
March to June and September to November, on the distance page, and the road guide's season table fills that in. Spring and early summer are cool on the ridge while the plain bakes, with the sal forest at its greenest in March; September to November is the best driving of the year on the plain, with the cane standing rather than moving, and the clearest views from Tip n Top after the rains, though Diwali week is the busy one. July and August are wet: the state highway floods in patches, small slips can close the ghat for hours, and the drivers check at Kotdwar before starting the climb, with the wait at the Sidhbali Baba temple rather than on the hill. From November to March the cane trolleys slow the plain, the ghat is misty on January mornings, snow is rare, and the cantonment sits close to freezing at dawn; leave at five still, but expect an hour more.
What does a Lansdowne weekend cab cost?

Where the car goes once you are up
Not far, and that is the cantonment's doing. Lansdowne is an army station on a ridge, the roads inside it are short and the walks are the point, so the car parks at the guesthouse and stays there for most of the two days. The driver takes you up to Tip n Top for the evening light, out to the villages and viewpoints beyond the cantonment on the second morning if you want a drive rather than a walk, and back down the ghat when it is time; the lake, the church and the bazaar are on foot. On a round trip the car is billed by the day whether it moves or not, so a day spent walking costs the same as a day spent driving, and the driver's night halt is at actuals.
