For Chopta, turn off at Ukhimath, ascending to the meadow campsite at 2,680 metres, known as the Mini Switzerland of India. The 3.5 km trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple (3,680m), the highest Shiva temple in the world, and the further 1.5 km scramble to Chandrashila summit (4,000m) for 360-degree Himalayan panoramas of Nanda Devi, Trisul, and Kedarnath peaks are the circuit's highlight. For Auli, continue from Joshimath via ropeway or road to reach this skiing paradise at 2,800 metres, with views of Nanda Devi (India's second highest peak). Joshimath's Narsingh Temple and the hot springs at Tapovan are bonus stops. Groups should carry warm layers even in summer. The tempo traveller parks at roadheads while the group treks. Maggi and chai at mountain stalls fuel the adventure.
