There are two routes: the Manali-Leh Highway (475 km from Manali, 2 days) via Rohtang Pass, Keylong, Sarchu, and Tanglang La (5,328m, one of the world's highest motorable passes); or the Srinagar-Leh Highway (435 km, 2 days) via Sonamarg, Zoji La, Kargil, and Lamayuru. Both routes demand acclimatisation stops. From Delhi, drive to Manali on day one (530 km via NH44 and NH21). Day two crosses Rohtang Pass (or Atal Tunnel) to Keylong/Jispa. Day three covers the iconic Sarchu-Pang-Tanglang La-Leh stretch through the Morey Plains, a surreal high-altitude desert. In Leh (3,500m), explore Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Hall of Fame, and the colourful Leh Market. Day trips include Pangong Tso Lake (160 km, the stunning blue lake on the China border), Nubra Valley via Khardung La (5,359m, one of the world's highest motorable roads) for the Hunder sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels, and Turtuk, India's northernmost village. Inner Line Permits (ILP) are required for Pangong, Nubra, and Turtuk. Book them online or through Leh agents. Carry Diamox for altitude sickness, stay hydrated, and avoid exertion on the first day in Leh. Tempo travellers must be well-maintained for this route; a 26-seater Maharaja tempo is recommended for group comfort at high altitudes.
