The Dehradun to Yamunotri tempo traveller route is the shortest approach to the first shrine of the Char Dham circuit, the source of the sacred Yamuna. Travel via Mussoorie bypass and Purola on NH507 through the Yamuna Valley, passing through dense forests of chir pine and deodar. The charming hill town of Barkot, at 1,220m with sweeping views of the Bandarpunch glacier (6,316m), is the ideal overnight halt — its apple orchards and quiet atmosphere make it a group favourite. From Barkot, continue through Syachidham Ashram and Hanuman Chatti to Janki Chatti (2,650m), where the 6 km paved trek to Yamunotri Temple begins. The trail follows the young Yamuna River through birch and rhododendron groves. At the temple (3,293m), the natural hot water springs at Surya Kund are remarkable — pilgrims tie muslin cloth bundles of rice and potatoes into the scalding water to cook prasad. Divya Shila, a rock pillar worshipped before entering the temple, and the frozen lake of Saptrishi Kund above are highlights for adventurous groups.
