The drive breaks naturally into two epic days. Day one covers Delhi to Manali (roughly 540 km) on NH-44 and NH-3 through Chandigarh, Bilaspur, and Mandi, climbing from the plains into the Kullu Valley for an overnight rest and altitude preparation at Manali. Day two is the legendary Manali–Leh Highway itself — over the Atal Tunnel and up through the Lahaul valley to Keylong, the last real town, then across the high wilderness past Jispa and the Baralacha La pass to the windswept tented camp at Sarchu, and on across the Gata Loops, the Nakee La and Lachung La passes, and finally the mighty Tanglang La — one of the highest motorable passes in the world — before the long descent to Leh. Because the passes only clear of snow from around mid-June to mid-September, this route is strictly seasonal, and each day should start very early to reach shelter before the afternoon winds and to respect daylight at altitude.

Keylong, the administrative headquarters of Lahaul at around 10,000 feet, is the key fuel, food, and rest point on day two and often a second night's option for travellers taking it gently.
