Most travellers default to the boring NH-44 + NH-5 grind to Shimla. Add these 7 stops and 8 hours becomes a scenic day. For full hill-station context see our Delhi to Agra Playbook (similar route principles).
Why the Boring Route Is a Missed Opportunity
The 350 km Delhi-Shimla route via NH-44 is paved, fast, signal-light. Most travellers just go for it. But adding 4 hours of stops turns the journey into half the holiday.
Stop 1: Murthal Parathas (Km 50, 30 min)
Sukhdev Dhaba and Amrik Sukhdev Dhaba are the legends. Aloo paratha + lassi at 6 AM is the unofficial Delhi-hill-station ritual. Sukhdev is the original; Amrik Sukhdev has slightly bigger portions. Pick one — locals say both are excellent.
Stop 2: Pinjore Gardens (Km 245, 45 min)
Mughal-era terraced garden. Skip if monsoon (water features off). Worth it for photography in winter sun.
Stop 3: Kalka Toy Train Photo (Km 270, 30 min)
The Shimla-Kalka toy train (UNESCO heritage) starts here. Even if you're not riding, the platform photo is iconic. 30 min stop.
Stop 4: Parwanoo Cable Car + Apple Orchards (Km 285, 60 min)
Ropeway across the gorge — 1 km cable ride. Apple orchards (in season) sell direct from farm. Skip if cable-car queue >45 min.
Stop 5: Solan Mall (Km 300, 30 min)
Not what you think — the original British-era hill-station mall, predating Shimla's. Quiet, photogenic, less touristy.
Stop 6: Kasauli Detour (60 min off-route, 90 min add)
1 hour off-route but worth it for sunset. Colonial bungalows, Christ Church, Sunset Point. See Kasol vs Kasauli vs Kufri.
Stop 7: Shogi Viewpoint (Km 340, 15 min)
10 km before Shimla. Misty pine view that lets you start photographing before reaching town. Quick coffee + photo stop.
Total Time Budget
Base 8-hour drive + ~4 hours of stops = 12-hour day. Start 6 AM Delhi, reach Shimla 6 PM with multiple memorable stops vs straight-shot 2 PM arrival with nothing to remember.
Vehicle Recommendation
Innova for 4 pax (hill grade comfort). Sedan only if 2 pax with light luggage. Tempo for 6+ — see tempo size guide.
