The most precise same-day Delhi-Agra plan on the Indian web. For broader logistics see our Delhi to Agra Playbook.
Why Same-Day Works (and Why Some Regret It)
Same-day works if: you have 14+ hours, you're flexible with departure (4 AM ideal), you skip Fatehpur Sikri. It fails if: you have toddlers, you want a relaxed pace, you're combining with Mathura-Vrindavan.
Hour 4-6 AM: Delhi Pickup, Expressway, Fuel
4:00 — pickup at Delhi hotel. 4:15-5:00 — DND/Yamuna Expressway entry. 5:00 — Indian Oil pump at Jewar exit (loo + chai stop, 10 min). 5:15-6:30 — expressway cruise.
Hour 6-9 AM: Taj Entry, Photography, Mausoleum
6:30 — Taj East Gate entry (Oct-Mar) / 6 AM (Apr-Sep). 6:30-7:30 — main mausoleum photo + colour-shift window. 7:30-8:30 — gardens + side mosques + Yamuna view. 8:30-9:00 — exit + breakfast (Pind Balluchi or hotel).
Hour 9-11 AM: Agra Fort
9:30 — Agra Fort entry. 9:30-11:00 — Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, Musamman Burj (where Shah Jahan died viewing the Taj).
Hour 11-12 PM: Lunch
Pind Balluchi (vegetarian, near Taj) or Pinch of Spice (non-veg, Fatehabad Road).
Hour 12-2 PM: Fatehpur Sikri (Skip If Tight)
40 km west of Agra. Mughal ghost-city, 90-min visit. Skip if you want pre-rush-hour return.
Hour 2-4 PM: Sikandra OR Itimad-ud-Daulah
Pick one. Sikandra (Akbar's tomb) is grander; Baby Taj is delicate marble inlay.
Hour 4-7 PM: Return Drive
Departure from Agra by 4 PM avoids the Faridabad return-jam window (5-7 PM critical). Expressway + alternate routes if needed (FNG vs DND).
Backup Plan A: Missed Sunrise → Afternoon Entry
Use East gate at 11 AM-1 PM (less crowded than 9-11). Mausoleum chamber wait shorter mid-day.
Backup Plan B: Friday Closure → Mathura-Vrindavan Pivot
If you forgot Friday is Taj-closed: pivot to Mathura Krishna Janmabhoomi + Vishram Ghat + Vrindavan Banke Bihari. Full day, similar drive distance.
Backup Plan C: Return Traffic Jam at Faridabad
If 5-7 PM Faridabad jam looks bad, take FNG Expressway → Greater Noida → Yamuna Expressway loop. Adds 20 km but bypasses jam.
Real Cost Breakdown (4 pax, Innova)
