Take the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway (NH48) for 280 km to Jaipur, then continue 135 km on NH48/NH8 to Ajmer. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the tomb of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti, is one of India's most revered shrines visited by people of all faiths. The qawwali performances in the dargah courtyard are soul-stirring, especially on Thursday evenings. The Buland Darwaza entrance, Akbar's Mosque, and the massive deg (cauldrons) where food is cooked for pilgrims are architectural marvels. From Ajmer, drive 14 km over the scenic Nag Pahar (Snake Mountain) pass to Pushkar, home to the only Brahma Temple in the world and one of India's oldest cities. Pushkar's 52 ghats around the sacred lake, the colourful bazaar selling silver jewellery, embroidered textiles, and rose products (Pushkar is famous for its roses), and the laid-back cafe culture along the lake create a unique atmosphere. During November, the Pushkar Camel Fair transforms the desert town into a carnival of camel trading, moustache competitions, folk music, and hot air balloon rides.
