French guide rates in Jaipur

The guide fee is set by language, not by city — a French speaker is ₹2,800 a day in Jaipur and the same in Delhi. The vehicle half of a bundled day is the published 4 hr / 40 km and 8 hr / 80 km rental package, so every figure below is two published rates added together and nothing else.

Every licence card carries a photograph, a licence number, the issuing region and the languages the holder is examined in. We send a photograph of the card on WhatsApp when a booking is confirmed, before you pay anything, so you can check the number, the region and the language against the guide who meets you.

Why the licence matters here. Archaeological Survey of India monuments admit licensed guides and turn away unlicensed ones at the ticket gate. An unlicensed "guide" who approaches you outside the Taj Mahal or Amber Fort cannot accompany you inside, which is why the pitch is always made in the car park.

French in Jaipur

What a French commentary does here that it does not do elsewhere

Jai Singh II built Jantar Mantar using European astronomical tables, and the ones he relied on most were French. He had Philippe de la Hire’s tables translated into Sanskrit, compared them against his own observations, and found them wanting — which is why he built instruments this large. A French commentary at the observatory is standing inside a conversation between Jaipur and Paris.

What your guide covers

French has its own long tradition of writing about Mughal India — the seventeenth-century travellers Bernier and Tavernier were French, and they described Shah Jahan’s court first-hand — so a French commentary can set a monument against the account of someone who stood in it.

  • Jai Singh’s use of de la Hire’s tables, the Sanskrit translation he commissioned, and the discrepancies he set out to resolve.

  • The Samrat Yantra and Jai Prakash instruments, and why masonry at that scale beat the brass instruments Europe was using.

  • The 1727 city plan — a nine-block grid laid out by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya — read as eighteenth-century planning rather than as picturesque old town.

The shape of the day

A half day and a full day in Jaipur

Jaipur is the city on this list where a guide is most often the difference between shopping and being shopped. It is the world’s largest centre for cut and polished gemstones, the commission chain around a tourist is long and well practised, and a licensed guide who is paid a fixed fee by you has no stake in where you buy. Ask your guide directly whether they take commission; a licensed one will give you a straight answer.

Amber Fort in the morning

Amber opens at 08:00 and is a different place at 08:15 than at 11:00. This half day exists to use that.

  1. 07:30

    Hotel pickup

Half an hour up the Amber road, which is clear at this hour and a car park by ten.

  2. 08:00

    Amber Fort, at opening

Two hours. The Jaleb Chowk, the Ganesh Pol, the Sheesh Mahal with its mirror vault, and the Sukh Niwas with the water channel that cooled it. Up by jeep, down on foot through the Jaleb Chowk if the group is willing.

  3. 10:15

Panna Meena ka Kund and the Amber lanes

The stepwell below the fort, and the old town most itineraries drive straight past.

  4. 11:00

Jal Mahal and the drive back

A photo stop at the lake palace — you cannot go in, and the guide will tell you so rather than let you expect otherwise.

  5. 11:45

    Drop

Back at the hotel by noon, which leaves the walled city for the afternoon on your own if you want it.

Full day · ₹2,800 guide

Amber Fort and the walled city

The full Jaipur day: a Rajput hill fort in the morning, the planned city of 1727 in the afternoon.

  1. 07:30

    Hotel pickup

The early start is the whole trick in Jaipur — Amber at 08:00 and the City Palace after lunch, rather than both in the middle of the day.

  2. 08:00

    Amber Fort

Two and a half hours at opening. Sheesh Mahal, Ganesh Pol, the Mughal garden in the lake, and the Kesar Kyari.

  3. 10:45

    Jaigarh Fort

Two kilometres above Amber, and nearly empty. The Jaivana cannon — the largest wheeled cannon of its era — and the water system that supplied both forts.

  4. 12:15

    Lunch in the city

Rajasthani thali, or a rooftop on Hawa Mahal Road with the facade in front of you. Paid separately.

  5. 13:30

    City Palace

Two hours. The Mubarak Mahal, the armoury, the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas, and Chandra Mahal if you took the ₹190 or ₹700 add-on.

  6. 15:30

    Jantar Mantar

Next door, and an hour well spent — the instruments still work, and a guide who can read them turns a courtyard of sculptures into an observatory.

  7. 16:30

    Hawa Mahal and Johari Bazaar

The facade from the street and from the rooftop cafe opposite, then the bazaar: Johari for gemstones, Bapu for textiles.

  8. 18:00

Nahargarh Fort for sunset, or drop

In peak season Nahargarh stays open to 21:00 and the view over the lit walled city is the best in Jaipur. Otherwise the day ends in the bazaar.

Orientation. The walled Pink City holds the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal within a few hundred metres of each other. Amber Fort is eleven kilometres north, about half an hour. Jaigarh sits two kilometres above Amber; Nahargarh is six kilometres from the centre on the other side of the ridge.

About French guides

Working in French

French visitors tend to arrive having read a good deal of history already, and the questions that follow are about chronology and attribution rather than "when was it built".

Who it serves

France, Belgium, Switzerland, Québec, Morocco, Tunisia

How names are handled

Dynastic names follow French convention, with the Indian pronunciation given alongside so you can read signage and ticket counters.

Notice we need

Book 24–48 hours ahead in the October–March season.

The licence, and how to check it

A Regional Level Guide licence is issued by the Ministry of Tourism after a written examination, an interview and a training course run through the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management. It is issued for a tourism region, not for the whole country, and it names the foreign languages the holder is examined in.

Every licence card carries a photograph, a licence number, the issuing region and the languages the holder is examined in. We send a photograph of the card on WhatsApp when a booking is confirmed, before you pay anything, so you can check the number, the region and the language against the guide who meets you.

Jaipur is licensed under the Rajasthan. Rajasthan — the state issues its own regional guide licences

Questions people ask

French guides in Jaipur

FAQs

It did. Jai Singh II collected European astronomical tables and had Philippe de la Hire’s translated into Sanskrit; he also received a Jesuit delegation and sent men to Europe for instruments and texts. When he checked the tables against his own sightings and found errors, he responded by building sundials and quadrants at architectural scale, because stone at that size could be read more finely than the small brass instruments then in use. It is one of the best eighteenth-century stories in India and it is told at that courtyard almost nowhere — ask for it.
