The New Year trip from Delhi that works is the one where you know, well before the thirty-first, exactly where you are sleeping that night. Everything else - the drive, the vehicle, the fare - follows from that decision, and the room is the part that sells out first. This guide is about the towns: what the night of the thirty-first is actually like in each, what kind of party or quiet you get, where people stay, and how far ahead you need to move. The Five Towns, and the Night Each One Gives You

1. Manali - the Loud One

Manali is where most of Delhi's under-thirties want to be on the thirty-first, and the town knows it. Our best-time page puts Manali's snowfall from December and gives the winter range as minus five to fifteen degrees, so the cold is real and the snow is likely rather than promised. The shape of the night is the same every year: an afternoon at Solang Valley above the town for snow play, back down as it gets dark, and then bonfires at the hotels and camps while the cafes in Old Manali run countdowns. Nobody sleeps early and nobody expects to.

Two things to know before you commit. The first is that Rohtang is closed from December to April in a normal year, so the snow day is Solang or the Atal Tunnel to Sissu on the Lahaul side, not the pass - which is fine, because both carry snow more reliably than the town does. 2. Jaipur - the Dressed-Up One

The most comfortable New Year on this list, and the only one where the weather is an asset rather than something to endure. Our best-time page gives Jaipur eight to twenty-five degrees in the winter months and calls November to February the peak - cool, pleasant, with chilly evenings, which is exactly what you want for a rooftop dinner and an outdoor gala. Heritage properties across the city run dinner evenings; the rooftop restaurants in the old town look across at the illuminated forts; the bazaars stay open late.

Jaipur also gives you a proper first morning. Amber and the City Palace on the first of January are easier than on any summer day, and the Literature Festival follows in January if you want to stretch the trip. Because Jaipur is a real city rather than a hill town, the room options run from budget to extravagant, and it is the one destination here where booking late still leaves you something - though not something good. 3. Rishikesh - the Quiet-by-the-River One

For people who want a fire, a river and no dance floor. The camps strung along the Ganga upriver run New Year evenings around a bonfire and a barbecue, and the appeal is the morning as much as the night - the first sunrise of the year over the water, then an aarti at the ghats, which our Rishikesh notes list as a nightly fixture at Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan. It is also the most family-workable of the five for a two-night trip: close enough at 250 km that you are there by afternoon, and quiet enough that children sleep. 4. Shimla and Kufri - the Family One

Shimla does New Year the way it does everything - on foot, on the Mall, in the cold. The Ridge fills up before midnight and the crowd is families rather than a club queue, which is the point.

The snow, if you want it, is above the town rather than on the Mall: Kufri holds it more often, and Narkanda further out on the Rampur road has it as a matter of course. Plan that as a daytime run on the first or the thirtieth, with the same driver, and leave the night to the town. 5. Kasauli and Chail - the Ones Where Nothing Happens

Deliberately. Kasauli is a small cantonment town in pine forest, and our best-time page describes its winter in exactly those terms - quiet, peaceful, with possible frost, good for people seeking solitude - with Monkey Point and Christ Church and a walk through the trees as the whole of the sightseeing. Chail is the old royal retreat above Kandaghat with its famously high cricket ground, and our route notes give it occasional snow in the deodar forests between December and February.

Neither town throws a party. What they have is a handful of small properties that put on a dinner and light a fire, and a New Year's Day that starts with silence instead of a headache. If that is what you are after, these are also the two that need the earliest booking of the five, because there are so few rooms to go round.

How Far Ahead to Book

In order, and the order matters more than the dates:

• The room first, and by November. Hotels in the hill towns go before cars do, and Kasauli and Chail go earliest of all because they have the fewest rooms. Jaipur is the one place still holding stock in December, and not the stock you wanted.
• The car the same day. Once the room is fixed, the destination, the dates and the head count are settled, which is everything we need to quote. The last week of December is the busiest of the year on every corridor out of Delhi and cars book out days ahead.
• Travel on the twenty-ninth or thirtieth, not the thirty-first. Arriving a day early means you see the place instead of the back of a queue, and it takes the pressure off a winter drive where fog can cost you two hours on the plains.
• Hold the first of January loosely. Everyone leaves the hills at once on the first. A late breakfast and an afternoon departure is a better drive than a dawn start into the same traffic, and an extra night is the cheapest way to avoid the crush entirely.
• Keep a spare day if you are going high. A fresh fall can hold a hill road for a morning. The trips that go wrong in winter are the ones with a flight to catch.

What the Night Costs You in Planning Terms

Not money - that is on the road trips guide, where the rate card is worked out corridor by corridor - but attention. A New Year trip has three moving parts that all have to line up: the room on the thirty-first, the car that gets you there before dark, and the party or the quiet you actually came for. Groups get this wrong by booking the car first and then discovering the hill town is full; families get it wrong by treating a 530 km winter drive as a day trip. Fix the night, then work backwards.
