The Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar

The guides

Our tour guides — languages, regions and credentials

Every guide we book holds a Ministry-of-Tourism Regional Level Guide licence for the region they work in and the languages they are examined in. This page sets out the bench by language and region, and what the credential means. It does not list individual guides by name, and the reason for that is on the page rather than left to inference.

Why there are no profiles here

What this page does not do, and why

No names, no photographs, no invented specialisms

The obvious thing to put on a page called "our tour guides" is a grid of faces with names, years of experience and a line about each one’s speciality. We have not, because we would have had to make it up — and a fabricated roster is the most damaging kind of invention, since it is precisely the thing a customer relies on when deciding whom to trust with their day.

What we can tell you is true and checkable: the licence every guide holds, which regions and languages the bench covers, and the name and licence card of the specific guide assigned to your booking — sent to you on WhatsApp before any money changes hands. That is a better guarantee than a profile page, because it is about the person who will actually meet you.

If and when individual guides agree to be named and photographed here, this is where they will go, with their licence numbers. Until then the page says what it knows.

Every licence card carries a photograph, a licence number, the issuing region and the languages the holder is examined in. We send a photograph of the card on WhatsApp when a booking is confirmed, before you pay anything, so you can check the number, the region and the language against the guide who meets you.

A Regional Level Guide licence is issued by the Ministry of Tourism after a written examination, an interview and a training course run through the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management. It is issued for a tourism region, not for the whole country, and it names the foreign languages the holder is examined in.

Archaeological Survey of India monuments admit licensed guides and turn away unlicensed ones at the ticket gate. An unlicensed "guide" who approaches you outside the Taj Mahal or Amber Fort cannot accompany you inside, which is why the pitch is always made in the car park.

By language

The ten languages, and what each is for

The notice column is the honest one. Where a language is thin we say so, and we would rather tell you before you book than substitute an English-speaking guide on the morning.

By region

Which licence covers which city

Licences are regional. This is why a Golden Triangle tour changes guide at the Rajasthan line and keeps the same car and driver throughout.

The Red Fort, Delhi

Northern Region

Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Amritsar, Rishikesh

Northern Region — Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh. One guide can legitimately cover all five of these cities, and several of our longer bookings do exactly that.

Amber Fort, Jaipur

Rajasthan

Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur

Rajasthan — the state issues its own regional guide licences. A Northern Region licence does not cover these cities, and a guide who claims otherwise is telling you something untrue.

FAQs

Because we would have to invent the list. Nobody on this bench has yet agreed to be named and photographed on a public page, and publishing a roster of plausible-sounding guides with specialisms attached would be a fabrication — the same kind this site removed when it deleted 128 invented customer reviews from its own markup. What you get instead is the name and licence card of the actual guide assigned to your booking, before you pay.
