The Journey

How long is the drive to Dharamshala?

Delhi Airport to Dharamshala is 490 km and ten to eleven hours, north on NH44 to Jalandhar and then NH503 through Pathankot into the Kangra valley. It is a long day and worth planning rather than improvising.

For an afternoon or evening arrival at Delhi we would suggest breaking the journey — Pathankot or Jalandhar makes an easy overnight and turns a punishing eleven hours into two comfortable halves, with the Kangra valley arrival in daylight. It costs the same either way.

The last stretch matters. McLeod Ganj sits 9 km above lower Dharamshala on a steep narrow road that takes 25 minutes and congests badly in season, with very limited parking at the top. Tell us whether you are staying in lower Dharamshala, Sidhbari or up at McLeod Ganj and we will plan the drop properly.

What do travellers ask about this airport transfer?

Ten to eleven hours for 490 km, on NH44 to Jalandhar and then NH503 via Pathankot. The highway section is fast; the final approach into the Kangra valley and up to McLeod Ganj is what adds the time. We generally recommend an overnight break for anything but an early-morning arrival.
