The Journey

How long is the drive to Nainital?

Delhi Airport to Nainital is 300 km and seven to eight hours, out on NH9 through Moradabad and Rudrapur to Kathgodam, then the 35 km climb up to the lake. The driver tracks your flight and meets you at arrivals, which on a seven-hour transfer is the difference between a planned journey and an improvised one.

The plains section to Kathgodam is five to six hours of straightforward highway. The climb from Kathgodam is 35 km and takes an hour and a quarter, and it is the part that decides your arrival time. Mornings are considerably better than evenings for this route.

Worth knowing in advance: Nainital restricts vehicle entry to the town on the busiest weekends of the April to June season, and the Mall road around the lake is closed to traffic in the evenings. We plan the drop at the Tallital or Mallital end depending on your hotel.
