The short answer

Do you need a guide at India Gate?

Do you need a guide at India Gate?

No. India Gate is a war memorial on a ceremonial axis, free to approach, open at all hours, and it takes about an hour of which fifty minutes is walking and looking. There is nothing here a guide needs to get you past and no ticket to decide about.

When it is worth it anyway

You are visiting India Gate on its own. Drive past it in the evening when it is lit, walk the lawns for half an hour, and spend the guide fee on Qutub Minar or Humayun’s Tomb instead. Where a guide earns it is the full Delhi day this sits at the end of.

The guide's part

What a guide actually does at India Gate

Four specific things, rather than "expert commentary". If none of them is worth ₹900 to you, do not book one.

  • Explains in five minutes what the memorial actually is — the names of some 13,000 Indian and British soldiers of the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, carved on the arch itself.

  • Points out what changed in 2022, when the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame was merged into the National War Memorial a few hundred metres away, because most material online still describes the old arrangement.

  • Sets it in the imperial plan — Lutyens, the 1911 transfer of the capital, and the axis running to Rashtrapati Bhavan — which is the only part that genuinely needs explaining.

On hiring a guide at the gate instead

Archaeological Survey of India monuments admit licensed guides and turn away unlicensed ones at the ticket gate. An unlicensed "guide" who approaches you outside the Taj Mahal or Amber Fort cannot accompany you inside, which is why the pitch is always made in the car park. We do not publish a rate for a guide hired at the gate because we do not set one — ask to see the licence card before you agree a price, and check that the photograph matches the person.
