The short answer

Do you need a guide at Fatehpur Sikri?

Do you need a guide at Fatehpur Sikri?

Yes, and here it is not close. Fatehpur Sikri is an empty city with almost no signage, where every building is a room whose function is the only interesting thing about it — and the touts at the Buland Darwaza are the most persistent on the Agra circuit.

When to skip it

Nothing. Of the ten monuments on this list, this is the one where unguided visitors most often leave early because they could not tell what they were looking at.

The guide's part

What a guide actually does at Fatehpur Sikri

Four specific things, rather than "expert commentary". If none of them is worth ₹900 to you, do not book one.

  • Tells you what each building was for, which is the entire content of the site: the Diwan-i-Khas and its single carved pillar, the Panch Mahal, the Ankh Michauli, Birbal’s house, the hospital.

  • Explains Akbar’s religious debates — held in this complex with Muslim, Hindu, Jain, Zoroastrian and Jesuit participants — and what the Din-i-Ilahi actually was.

  • Separates the palace complex, which is ticketed, from the Jama Masjid and the Salim Chishti dargah, which are a working mosque and shrine with free entry and their own etiquette.

  • Deals with the men at the mosque gate who will attach themselves to you, ask for a donation at the dargah and name a figure. A guide stops that before it starts.

What it costs

The guide fee, and the fee at the gate

Our guides are hired by the half or full day rather than per monument, so Fatehpur Sikri normally sits inside a Agra day with one or two other sights. The entry ticket is separate and goes to the monument, not to us.

English rates shown. Hindi is lower; the seven foreign languages run ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 a day — the whole card is on the rate-card page. Entry at Fatehpur Sikri is ₹50 for an Indian visitor and ₹610 for a foreign one, paid at the gate.

On hiring a guide at the gate instead

Archaeological Survey of India monuments admit licensed guides and turn away unlicensed ones at the ticket gate. An unlicensed "guide" who approaches you outside the Taj Mahal or Amber Fort cannot accompany you inside, which is why the pitch is always made in the car park. We do not publish a rate for a guide hired at the gate because we do not set one — ask to see the licence card before you agree a price, and check that the photograph matches the person.

FAQs

More than at any other monument on the Agra circuit. The site is a complete sixteenth-century city that was abandoned after about fourteen years, there is very little interpretive signage, and the buildings are empty — so what each room was for is the whole of the interest, and you cannot work it out by looking. Add the persistent unofficial guides at the Buland Darwaza and the dargah donation approach, and a licensed guide pays for itself in the first twenty minutes.
