Entry to the monument is ₹50, plus ₹200 to enter the mausoleum for an Indian visitor and ₹1,100, plus ₹200 to enter the mausoleum for a foreign one, paid separately at the gate. The short answer

Do you need a guide at Taj Mahal?

Do you need a guide at Taj Mahal?

Yes — and at the Taj Mahal more for the logistics than the history. There are three ticket tiers, a separate ₹200 mausoleum ticket, three gates that are not interchangeable, and a security queue that trebles between seven and nine in the morning.

When to skip it

You have been before, you are travelling light on a Thursday morning in August, and you only want an hour in the gardens. The complex is navigable without help once you know the gates.

The guide's part

What a guide actually does at Taj Mahal

Four specific things, rather than "expert commentary". If none of them is worth ₹900 to you, do not book one.

  • Gets you through the right gate with the right ticket, in the right order. This alone is usually worth the fee on a first visit.

  • Reads the calligraphy on the great gateway and tells you which surahs were chosen and why — including the optical correction that keeps the letters looking the same size as they rise.

  • Shows you where the marble is original and where it has been repaired, and what the inlay stones are and where each came from.

  • Tells you whether the ₹200 mausoleum ticket is worth it for you, which depends on what you came for.

What it costs

The guide fee, and the fee at the gate

Our guides are hired by the half or full day rather than per monument, so Taj Mahal normally sits inside a Agra day with one or two other sights. The entry ticket is separate and goes to the monument, not to us.

English rates shown. Hindi is lower; the seven foreign languages run ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 a day — the whole card is on the rate-card page. Entry at Taj Mahal is ₹50, plus ₹200 to enter the mausoleum for an Indian visitor and ₹1,100, plus ₹200 to enter the mausoleum for a foreign one, paid at the gate.

On hiring a guide at the gate instead

Archaeological Survey of India monuments admit licensed guides and turn away unlicensed ones at the ticket gate. An unlicensed "guide" who approaches you outside the Taj Mahal or Amber Fort cannot accompany you inside, which is why the pitch is always made in the car park. We do not publish a rate for a guide hired at the gate because we do not set one — ask to see the licence card before you agree a price, and check that the photograph matches the person.
