The short answer

Do you need a guide at Red Fort?

Do you need a guide at Red Fort?

Yes, because most of what made the Red Fort important is no longer standing and a visitor cannot see the gaps. Two-thirds of the palace was demolished after 1857 and replaced with barracks; what you walk through is the surviving third plus a great deal of lawn where the rest was.

When to skip it

You have an hour and want the Lahori Gate and the Diwan-i-Aam. For a short visit the fort reads adequately on its own; it is the two-hour visit that needs explaining.

The guide's part

What a guide actually does at Red Fort

Four specific things, rather than "expert commentary". If none of them is worth ₹900 to you, do not book one.

  • Shows you what is missing: which buildings were demolished after the 1857 rebellion, what the barracks replaced, and what the lawns were.

  • Explains the Diwan-i-Khas, the Rang Mahal and the Khas Mahal as a connected palace with a water channel running through it, rather than as separate pavilions.

  • Covers the twentieth century — the 1945 Indian National Army trials held inside the fort, and the Independence Day address from the ramparts — which is why the fort matters politically today.

  • Points out where the pietra dura panels in the Diwan-i-Khas were, and where the Orpheus plaque went.

What it costs

The guide fee, and the fee at the gate

Our guides are hired by the half or full day rather than per monument, so Red Fort normally sits inside a Delhi day with one or two other sights. The entry ticket is separate and goes to the monument, not to us.

English rates shown. Hindi is lower; the seven foreign languages run ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 a day — the whole card is on the rate-card page. Entry at Red Fort is ₹35 for an Indian visitor and ₹550 for a foreign one, paid at the gate.

On hiring a guide at the gate instead

Archaeological Survey of India monuments admit licensed guides and turn away unlicensed ones at the ticket gate. An unlicensed "guide" who approaches you outside the Taj Mahal or Amber Fort cannot accompany you inside, which is why the pitch is always made in the car park. We do not publish a rate for a guide hired at the gate because we do not set one — ask to see the licence card before you agree a price, and check that the photograph matches the person.

Hired by the half or full day rather than per monument: ₹900 for a half day or ₹1,500 for a full day in English, ₹700 and ₹1,200 in Hindi, ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 a day for the foreign languages. Entry is ₹35 for an Indian visitor and ₹550 for a foreign one. An Old Delhi half day normally takes in the fort, the Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk together, which is how most people buy it.
