Planning a weekend out of Manali

Manali sits at the head of the Kullu valley with the Rohtang pass above it and the Parvati and Sainj valleys branching off below. A weekend from here can go over the pass into Lahaul, sideways into the side valleys, or back down toward Shimla and the plain.

The one thing to settle before planning anything northward: Rohtang requires a permit, has a daily vehicle cap, and is shut by snow for much of the year. The Atal tunnel bypasses it to Lahaul and stays open far longer, but conditions still close it. Check before committing.

Return fares come from the published round-trip rate card rather than being written by hand.

Kasol and Chalal on the Parvati river, the hot springs and gurudwara at Manikaran, and the Kheerganga trailhead further up the valley.

How the weekend runs

Three hours for seventy-five kilometres, which is the Parvati road. The Kheerganga walk is a four-hour climb and the Chalal riverside path is an evening walk — neither fits a day trip. One night does both ends of the valley.

Manali to Spiti via Kaza

2 nights · 3 days
Distance one way
200 km
Driving time
8-9 hours
Sedan, return
₹5,940

₹7,560

Key monastery above the Spiti river, Kibber, the Chandratal lake road, and Tabo's thousand-year-old mud monastery further down the valley.

How the weekend runs

Eight to nine hours over Kunzum La at 4,590 metres, and the road exists only from roughly June to October. Three days absolute minimum and four is sensible. This is high-altitude travel, not a weekend drive — altitude sickness is a real consideration at Kaza's 3,800 metres.

Manali to Lahaul and Keylong

1 night · 2 days
Distance one way
115 km
Driving time
3.5-4 hours
Sedan, return
₹5,940

The Chandra and Bhaga valleys beyond the Atal tunnel, Keylong town, the Kardang and Shashur monasteries above it, and a landscape with almost no trees at all.

How the weekend runs

Through the Atal tunnel, which turns what was a Rohtang day into a comfortable drive. The night is what lets you reach the monasteries above Keylong and see the Bhaga valley in morning light rather than driving straight back.

Best season: Jun-Oct; tunnel-dependent in winter 600 km billed

The Tsuglagkhang complex at McLeod Ganj, the Bhagsu waterfall, the Triund trailhead, and the Kangra fort and Masroor rock temples on the valley floor.

How the weekend runs

Seven hours around through Mandi. Two nights: McLeod Ganj and the Kangra valley are separate days, and the Triund walk is a third if you want it.

The Ridge and the Mall, Christ Church, Jakhoo temple above the town, the Viceregal Lodge, and the Kalka toy train.

How the weekend runs

Seven to eight hours down the Kullu valley and along the Shimla ridge road. Two nights — Shimla wants an evening on the Mall and a full day after it, and the drive is too long to arrive and leave the next morning.

The Tirthan river for trout, the Great Himalayan National Park's Gushaini entrance, Jalori pass above the valley, and the Serolsar lake walk beyond it.

How the weekend runs

Three hours including the turn off the main valley. The park walks and the Jalori pass trail both want a morning start, and the valley is a place to sit by a river rather than drive through — which is what the night is for.

The Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, the Capitol Complex with Le Corbusier's High Court and Assembly, and the Rose Garden.

How the weekend runs

Eight hours down the whole Kullu and Mandi road. Two nights. The Capitol Complex is guided-tour only at fixed times and needs arranging ahead — worth doing, and the reason to give the city a full day.
