The Red Fort ramparts in Old Delhi

Full day, 8 hours · Delhi

Delhi Full-Day Tour with a licensed guide

Delhi is three cities that happen to share a name — the Mughal walled city, the Sultanate ruins fifteen kilometres south, and Lutyens’ imperial capital between them. They are forty minutes apart in traffic and belong to different centuries. This day takes all three in the order that keeps the driving to about thirty-five kilometres.

The plan

What the full day, 8 hours looks like

One full day, three centuries

One full day, three centuries

  1. 08:00

    Hotel pickup

The early start matters here: the Red Fort is calm at 09:30 and full by 11:00.

  2. 09:30

    Red Fort

Two hours. Lahori Gate, the Diwan-i-Aam, the marble pavilions — and what is missing, since two-thirds of the palace was demolished after 1857 and replaced with barracks.

  3. 11:30

    Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk

The mosque courtyard, then the lanes by cycle-rickshaw as far as Dariba Kalan. Walking is the only way in and the guide leads.

  4. 13:00

Lunch in the old city or Connaught Place

Paranthe Wali Gali for the street version, Karim’s for Mughlai. Paid separately.

  5. 14:15

    Humayun's Tomb

The building the Taj Mahal was drawn from, eighty years earlier. One hour, including Isa Khan’s tomb on the same ticket.

  6. 15:45

    Qutub Minar and Mehrauli

The Sultanate layer — the minaret in four building campaigns, the Iron Pillar, and a mosque assembled from twenty-seven dismantled temples.

  7. 17:15

India Gate and the Rajpath drive

The imperial axis at the end of the day, when it is lit and the lawns fill.

  8. 18:00

    Drop at hotel

The 8 hr / 80 km package covers the day as laid out.

Closed days, and how we plan round them

The Red Fort, the Lotus Temple and Akshardham all close on Monday. Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and India Gate are open every day, so a Monday booking runs the Sultanate monuments and Humayun’s Tomb instead — a good day, not a compromise.
