Tips for Your Post-Monsoon Season Trip
September is post-monsoon in Kashmir - the valley sits behind the Pir Panjal and gets far less monsoon rain than Himachal, which is why the month works so well
The Jammu-Srinagar highway through Ramban is the weak link - it does get blocked by slides after heavy rain. Start early and keep a buffer day
Flying into Srinagar and taking a local vehicle for 5-6 days is cheaper and far less tiring than driving 880 km each way - ask us for that quote too
Carry a light jacket even in September; nights at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg drop sharply after dark
About Post-Monsoon Season at Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam & Sonamarg
September is arguably the most underrated month in Kashmir. The monsoon has pulled back, the haze that sits over the valley in August lifts, and you get clear views of the Pir Panjal without the July crowd or the December cold. Days sit around 20-27 degrees, nights are cool, hotel and houseboat rates are in shoulder season, and towards the end of the month you start to catch the first edge of the Kashmir autumn. It is a genuinely good window and not enough people use it.
One geographical point worth knowing: Kashmir sits behind the Pir Panjal range and gets far less monsoon rain than Himachal or Uttarakhand, which is why September here is reliable in a way that September in Manali is not. The weak link is the Jammu-Srinagar highway through the Ramban stretch, which does get blocked by slides after heavy rain. Triveni Cabs runs this road regularly, our drivers check status before every leg, and we start early so hill sections are cleared in daylight. Keep one buffer day and you will almost certainly be fine.
The full Delhi-Srinagar road trip is about 880 km each way, so roughly 1,800 km over 7-8 days. That comes to around ₹19,800 in a sedan at ₹11/km, ₹32,400 in an Innova Crysta at ₹18/km, and ₹36,000 in a 12-seater Tempo Traveller at ₹20/km - tempo one-way is charged the same as round-trip, since the vehicle returns either way. Honestly though: for most people, flying into Srinagar and taking one of our vehicles for the 5-6 day valley circuit is cheaper and far less tiring. Ask for both quotes on 7668570551 and pick whichever suits.
